Knaresborough Castle
Knaresborough Castle is the ruins of a medieval fortress. On the first floor there is a museum where you can see, among others original furniture used at the court of the Tudor dynasty. There are also exhibits about the castle and the city. Some preserved fragments of the castle walls have also preserved traces of the fortress being shelled during the siege, when the civil war was underway. Various attractions have been prepared for visitors, including you can try on period clothes.
The castle was built by a Norman baron on a cliff above the Nidd River in 1100. It was surrounded by two rows of walls, stacked one after the other. They were completed by powerful towers, of which two survived to this day, formed the main gate. The estate had a vaulted basement, at least three upper floors, and served as the residence of the ruler. There were also residential buildings inside the walls, but only some of their foundations have survived to the present day.
