Chiltern Hills

Chiltern Hills, also called Chilterns, is a mountain range that stretches for about 70 km. At its widest point it is about 11 km. It was included in the "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" (AONB), which gives it protection comparable to that in national parks. You can organize hiking, biking and horse riding trips here. Another option is to rent a boat or kayak on one of the numerous tributaries of the Thames here.

In the past, this area was heavily forested, but due to aggressive felling, only the remains of former beech forests remained. Currently, it is primarily an agricultural area used for growing plants and raising cattle and sheep.

The name of the hills probably comes from the tribe Cilternsæte, which inhabited this area during the first Anglo-Saxon invasions of the British Isles. Historians are not entirely sure whether they were Celtic or Saxon, although the latter option seems more likely.
