Gateshead Millennium Bridge
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a movable tilting bridge connecting the cities of Gateshead and Newcastle. It is a bridge for both pedestrian and car traffic, and raised arms allow free passage of ships. The bridge is 126 m long and 8 m wide. Due to its shape, it is called the "Blinking Eye Bridge" or "Winking Eye Bridge", meaning "winking eye" or "winking eye".
The bridge was built according to the design of the architect Wilkinson Eyre, who won two prestigious awards for him. In 2002 he received the "Stirling Prize" awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects, and in 2003 the IStructE Supreme Award. The bridge itself was also awarded in 2005 with the international Outstanding Structure Award.
Gateshead Millennium Bridge was opened in September 2001, while the official opening with the participation of Queen Elizabeth II took place in May of the following year. Its construction cost 22 million pounds.
