Giant's Causeway
The Giant's Causeway, also known as the Giant's Road, is an area consisting of about 40,000 closely related basalt columns. They arose as a result of volcano eruption 50-60 million years ago. Some structures were formed through the weathering process in the likeness of human organs and giant shoes. Noteworthy are the low columns called Giant Eyes, Giant Harp or Honeycomb. A visitor center was built nearby.
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a dike built by the giant. Irish giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill was to fight the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built a dike so that they could meet. In one version of the myth, Fionn defeats his opponent. In another, seeing how great he is, Fionn is hiding. His wife disguises him as a child and puts him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the "child", he concludes that Fionn - as his father - must be a real giant. Benandonner then escapes to Scotland, destroying the causeway behind him.
