Carrick-a-Rede Bridge
Carrick-a-Rede is a rope bridge near Ballintoy. It is 20 m long and connects the mainland with the small island of Carrickarede. It is located at a height of 30 m, and below it you can see sharp rocks. On the island you can enjoy views and bird watching. On selected weekends you can visit the historic fishing hut located here. People who are afraid of crossing the bridge can get to the island by boat.
The bridges were built here by salmon fishermen probably for over 350 years. They had different forms. In the 1970s, the existing bridge had only one handrail and large gaps between the slats. The current bridge was built of steel rope and Douglas fir wood in 2008.
The island is no longer used by fishermen during the salmon fishing season, which lasts from June to September, with the appearance of a small population of this species. In the 1960s, about 300 fish were caught every day, but in 2002 only 300 fish were caught throughout the season.
