St Botolph's Church

The historic temple is one of the largest parish churches in England. Its tower is 83 meters high and is one of the tallest medieval towers in the country. In nice weather it is visible from the area of East Anglia, and the visibility from its top is more than 50 km. For centuries it has also served as a landmark for sailors.

The church was built in the 14th century. Archaeological finds indicate that a small Norman stone church used to stand in the same place. The church nave is 74 m long and 32 m wide. At its end there is a presbytery with a historic main altar. In the 18th century, the temple was rebuilt - then a wooden vault was added, but it was removed in the 20th century.

During the tour, it is worth paying attention to 62 carved misericords, i.e. brackets placed on the bottom of the raised seats. Their subject matter includes heraldry, mythology and scenes from everyday life.
