Varberg is one of the most important Swedish seaside resorts. In addition to sandy beaches with a truly Mediterranean climate, it also offers Sweden's largest density of spa resorts and excellent surfing conditions.

The history of the city dates back to the 13th century, when a fortress was built on a rocky promontory above the Kattegat. Modernized and extended over the centuries, it was a strategic point in this area, and after the end of the Danish-Swedish wars, it was turned into a prison. Today, the restored stronghold is made available to tourists, and within its walls there is a regional museum and a hostel.

However, the biggest attraction for most visitors to Varberg are the beaches here. The town is a trendy holiday resort with a promenade, numerous restaurants and bars, a market where you can buy everything from food to souvenirs and a fishing port.

From the beginning of the 20th century, Varberg also developed as a climatic health resort. It was then that the construction of saunas and spa centers began. The most famous of them is the Kallbadhuset looking like a palace, standing on stilts driven into the seabed, where you can jump from a hot sauna directly into the cold waters of the Baltic Sea.

Varberg's beaches are sandy and in summer you can enjoy both sun and sea bathing. Due to the winds blowing in this area, there are good conditions for windsurfing. Fishing tourism is also very popular. From the fishing port you can go fishing trips lasting several hours.
