Halmstad Castle

Local name: Halmstads Slott

Halmstad Castle is situated in the city center. It was built between 1609 and 1615 according to the design of the Dutch architect Willum Cornelissen. It has the form of a quadrilateral, in the middle of which there is a courtyard, which is 30 m long and 36 m wide. Currently, it is the seat of the governor of the Halland district and local councils.

In the 1920s and 1930s, one of the castle's main salons was decorated with a series of paintings by members of the Halmstad artistic group. These are large wall paintings inspired by the art of the 17th century. They depict mythological goddesses symbolizing such virtues as purity, moderation, love, justice, strength, truth and wisdom.

South of the castle is the chateau park, where you can see the remains of fortifications built at the beginning of the 17th century according to plans by Hans van Steenwinckel.
