Mölndal is a city that is part of the Gothenburg agglomeration. Currently, it is mainly an industrial center, which developed in the nineteenth century thanks to the use of the strength of local streams with a large decline. A lot of historic industrial buildings have survived to this day, and there are many lakes and small water cascades in the area.
The name of the city means "valley of mills" in Swedish. The first mills using the local streams and cascades were built in the Middle Ages. At the end of the 18th and 19th centuries, mills were built to power the first industrial factories. To this day, you can see the water channel systems to the mill wheels and some preserved plants, such as Kvarnbyns Handpappersbruk.
Today's Mölndal has mainly modern buildings. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are developing here. There are also technology parks at Gothenburg University and Chalmers University of Technology. Discover the city's industrial past at the Mölndal City Museum.
Mölndal's most important attractions lie outside its strict limits. The most important of these is Gunnebo Castle and Gardens. You can visit the residence with a guide or take part in a guided tour with theater elements. The park is great for long walks.
There are also numerous hiking and biking trails in the area leading to picturesque places. They are, among others lakes such as Horsikan and Stensjöns. Above Stensjöns there are beaches with a separate bathing area.
