The institution dealing with documenting local history was founded in 1861. Permanent exhibitions show the history of Gothenburg from ancient times, through the Vikings and the storm period (1611-1718, the period of great Swedish conquests in Europe) up to the nineteenth century and a period of rapid industrialization.
