The fortress, erected in 1308, is famous for being besieged a dozen times by the Norwegians, Danes and Swedes, but no one managed to capture it in combat. In the ruins, the cell of Thomas Leopold, a supporter of pietism (renewal movement in the Lutheran Church), who did not want to renounce his beliefs, died after 43 years of imprisonment.
