The 12th-century temple is the only Romanesque-style building in Sweden. The church, which was built as a Roman Catholic cathedral, has been a house of prayer for Protestants since 1536. The present-day appearance of the cathedral is the result of the 19th-century reconstruction aimed at creating an idealized Romanesque temple.
