Vigo is the largest city in Galicia and a popular tourist destination on the Atlantic coast of Spain. It is situated in a picturesque bay known for its beautiful beaches, and nearby Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park.
Fine, light sand and crystal clear waters of the Ocean are the greatest advantages of the beaches around Vigo. There are both well-developed beaches, such as Samil Beach, and secluded, quiet coves where you can relax alone. The coastal waters are perfect for sports such as surfing, sailing and diving.
The oldest part of Vigo has nice, historic buildings mainly from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. There is also the Castro Fortress, built in the 17th century. Today, there is a park within it, and from the walls you can admire the coast and the nearby Cies Island. Earlier, because it is Romanesque, is the small Church of Santa Maria de Castrelos. Monuments from Roman times can be seen at the Salinae archaeological site, where salt was mined in the past.
The city is also known for its beautiful parks. The most famous of them is the Castrelos Park with the Historical Gardens of Pazo de Castrelos. The park is home to the Quiñones de León Museum. It presents collections on the history of Vigo and the surrounding area. The Museum of the Sea of Galicia, which presents exhibitions related to the development of fisheries in the region, is also interesting. The museum also includes a marine aquarium.
