Peneda-Gerês National Park
Local name: Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês
The Peneda-Gerês National Park covers an area of 703 square kilometers. There you can see a diverse landscape full of mountains, hills, valleys and numerous watercourses. It is a land good for growing maize. There is no abandonment of agriculture in the higher areas - there are special agricultural terraces. The park has lush vegetation, in which various varieties of oak, plum, caduceus, birch and holly are particularly popular. It is worth visiting the reserve using the numerous and well-marked trekking routes of varying degrees of difficulty.
The only National Park in Portugal was established in 1971. It is also part of the Gerês-Xurés cross-border reserve. The villages located within the protected area blend in perfectly with the landscape thanks to the use of granite and straw as a building material for houses. It is worth visiting traditional places such as Ermida, Campo do Gerê or Pitões das Júnias.
