La Rosaleda del Retiro, or the rose garden at the Retiro Park in Madrid, offers tourists the opportunity to admire over 4,000 blooming flowers. In the central part there is a stone pool surrounded by a floral composition, there are also romantic fauna and Cupid fountains.
The garden was designed by gardener Cecilio Rodríguez in 1915. It covers less than a hectare, has an elliptical shape. Rodríguez was inspired by other European rosettes, including he visited the Rozat Bagatelle in the Bolognese Forest in Paris by architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. He brought over 350 different species of roses from Paris to the Retiro Park.
At the end of the 19th century, in the place of today's rose garden, there was a pond on which an ice rink was organized in winter. They were moved to a more shady place, because it was melting here very quickly.
