Equestrian statue of King Alfonso XII was erected in the Retiro Park in Madrid. It was cast in bronze, surrounded by a semicircular colonnade and smaller sculptures - allegories of Peace, Freedom and Progress. Tourists can admire this monumental work from the water perspective, there is a boat rental in the park.
The monument was placed on the edge of a rectangular pond, in the central point of the park, opposite is the building of the Crystal Palace. The avenues depart from the pond in different directions, their names refer to Latin American countries.
In 1902, a competition was announced for the design of a monument to the King of Spain, it was won by the famous architect José Grases Riera. However, he did not wait to finish the work on the statue, Teodoro Anasagasti became his deputy. Over 20 sculptors were involved in the construction of the monument, including Mariano Benlliure and Josep Clara.
