The architectural ensemble of the church of St. Ildefons and John of Matta and the Trinitarian Monastery of Madrid are examples of Baroque architecture. Among the historic elements of the temple have survived, among others. an altar with a wonderful chasuble decorated with the image of the Mother of God and a facade decorated with reliefs. There are also the grave and monument of Miguel de Cervantes.
The construction of the monastery complex began at the beginning of the 17th century for the gathering of Barefoot Trinitarians who came here from Toledo. The construction of the temple and abbey was prolonged due to numerous conflicts between the founders and the authorities. The architects who participated in the creation of the monastery were Marcos López and José del Arroyo.
There are reasonable assumptions that it was this monastery that paid the ransom for Cervantes, who was imprisoned in Algiers, so the writer was buried here after his death. In 1868, the church and monastery avoided demolition thanks to the intercession of the Royal Academy.
