The Church of San José is a Catholic temple very rich in works of art. Inside, the chapel of St. Teresa, designed so that it looks like a miniature church. Noteworthy are also the sculpture of Pensive Christ (Desamparo) by Alonso de Mena and Saint. Józef made by Luis Salvador Carmon.
On the facade of the building, above the central niche, there is a picture of Our Lady of Carmen painted by Roberto Michel, one of the authors of the nearby fountain Cybele. A commemorative plaque located nearby points out that in this temple, when it was part of the monastery of San Hermenegildo, he celebrated his first Holy Mass Lope de Vega.
The first church, then belonging to the Carmelite monastery, was built here in 1586. However, the building was demolished in the 18th century. In 1730, the construction of the current church was entrusted to the architect Pedro de Ribera.
