Mercado de la Cebada is one of Madrid's largest food markets, the stands are set on an area of about 6,000 m², shopping can be done on two levels. Sellers offer fresh fruit, fish, sausages and meat as well as cosmetics and flowers. You can also use the services of local craftsmen.
The first market hall was designed by the Spanish architect Mariano Calvo Pereira in the second half of the 19th century, it was rebuilt in the 1950s.
Food products have been sold in this place since the 16th century, stands were placed at Plaza de la Cebada where goods imported from nearby villages were traded.
After building the hall, this place became the most important marketplace in the city. However, changing standards and hygiene problems have led to major renovations.
