Plaça del Pi is located in the historical district of Barcelona - Barri Gòtic. You can admire historic buildings next to it, one of the most valuable architectural souvenirs is the Gothic Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi from the fourteenth century. The square is also famous for its local food market, which is organized here several times a month. You can buy baked goods, honey, cold cuts and pies, as well as traditional Catalan cheese.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Pi is known for the rosette located on the main facade of the building. Its diameter is up to 10 meters. There are six antique bells on the church tower, the oldest of them, called Andreua, dates from the second half of the 17th century.
The name of the square is derived from a pine that grew here from the second half of the 16th century until the war with France, during which it was destroyed. The tree that currently adorns the square was planted in the 1980s.
