Ethnological Museum

Local name: Museu Etnològic de Barcelona

Museu Etnològic de Barcelona on the Montjuïc hill presents exhibits related to cultures from around the world. You can see here, for example, Japanese masks and kimonos, rolls of parchment from Ethiopia or traditional costumes of peoples living in the Pyrenees at the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition also presents around 50,000 photos.

The exhibition has been divided into several parts. One of them presents objects from Spanish-speaking countries, while others show the traditions of peoples from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania.

The beginnings of the museum date back to the 1920s, when a group of enthusiasts from Catalonia decided to create a collection showing the richness of cultures of different regions. Initially, the collection consisted of objects brought in the mid-nineteenth century from the expedition incl. to Ecuador and Peru. The collection was also complemented by exhibits presented at the International Exhibition in 1929.
