Diocesan Museum

Local name: Museu Diocesà

The Diocesan Museum of Barcelona (Museu Diocesà) has gathered a rich collection of sacred art from different periods. It included, incl. processional crosses, gothic sculptures and paintings, and religious baroque paintings. A tourist attraction is the museum building itself - the Gothic Casa de la Pia Almoina. Modern doors contrasting with the historic facade, created by Catalan artist Josep Plandiura, attract attention.

Casa de la Pia Almoina was built in the 10th century, the building is also called Canonja because in the past it was inhabited by the regular canons of St. Augustine (canónigos regulares de san Agustín).

The museum was opened in 1916 as the Diocesan Archaeological Museum of Barcelona, initially it was located on the ground floor of the theological seminary. It was moved to today's seat in 1991. Currently, interesting temporary exhibitions are organized here that attract the attention of visitors.
