Budatín Castle

Local name: Budatínsky hrad

Budatin Castle is located in the suburbs of Žilina, at the mouth of Kysuca to the Váh. It is originally a Gothic building, rebuilt many times. Large Gothic and Renaissance parts stand out in the block. The castle has housed the Povazske Museum since the mid-20th century.

The castle in Budatina was built as a watchtower defending the crossing of the river. Initially, it was only a defensive tower, which was expanded over time. The Hungarian magnate Mateusz Csak had great merits for the construction of the Gothic fortress. The castle remained in his hands in the fourteenth century. due to the Turkish threat, even during the existence of a Renaissance palace in Budatina, it was very well fortified and adapted for defense.

After World War II, the castle, whose most characteristic element is the cylindrical tower, was nationalized. There is a museum here. His collections include, among others, a unique collection of items made of wire.
