Strecno Castle stands on a high rock above the watershed section of the Váh, called the Strečenske Isthmus. It is a Gothic defensive fortress, partly raised from ruins and reconstructed. You can see an exhibition of objects found during excavations and see the panorama of the area from the observation tower.
Strecno Castle was built in the fourteenth century. It remained in the hands of Hungarian magnate families and Hungarian kings. It fell in the 17th century when it belonged to the Wesselenyi family, who were involved in the anti-Habsburg uprising. The stronghold was burnt down by the imperial army. It was partially rebuilt in the 20th century.
Currently, the castle is an object made available to tourists. There is a road leading to it through two drawbridges and gates. The southern and northern palaces, the chapel and the main tower are rebuilt. At its top there is a viewpoint from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Vah valley and the surrounding mountains.
