The Lietava Castle stands on a rocky ridge in the Strażowskie Mountains, at an altitude of 635 m above sea level. It is now a permanent ruin and one of the largest surface fortresses in Slovakia. The Gothic-Renaissance castle is a very good vantage point to the surroundings.
The castle was built in the 13th century and initially belonged to the magnate Mateusz Czak. Over time, it came into the hands of the Thurzo family. It was inhabited by her until the beginning of the 17th century, and then began to fall into ruin. The first reconstruction work began only at the beginning of the 21st century.
The fortress is picturesquely situated on a wooded, rocky hill. High walls and external walls of residential buildings are still visible. The ruins offer extensive views of the countryside.
