Stara Ľubovnia Castle
Local name: Ľubovniansky hrad
The Lubowla Castle is located on a hill above the town of Stara Lubowla. It is one of the most magnificent strongholds in Spisz. Partially in a state of permanent ruin, partly reconstructed. Its characteristic element is a high, round tower. The renovated part includes exhibitions on the history of the castle and Spisz. You can also see copies of Polish coronation insignia.
The Lubowla Castle was strongly associated with the history of Poland. Built in the 13th century, from the 15th century it was the seat of Polish Spiš starostas. For a long time it remained in the hands of the Lubomirski family. During the Swedish invasion Polish coronation insignia were hidden here.
Currently, the castle is partially reconstructed. However, a large part of the buildings and walls are a permanent ruin. Among the reconstructed buildings, you can visit, among others, the castle chapel. There are exhibitions in the reconstructed rooms. They depicted the life of the castle inhabitants, objects that were discovered during excavations, photos, documents and utilitarian objects from the glory period of the stronghold.
