The Murań Plateau National Park is located near Banská Bystrica in the central part of Slovakia. It covers the karst area covered with beech and oak forests, and in the higher parts also with mountain pine. Its attractions are primarily the ruins of the Murań castle and karst valleys with springs and streams.
The Muran Plateau National Park was created in 1997. It belongs to the youngest in Slovakia and not often visited by tourists. The vast limestone plateau is crossed by valleys, ravines and cliffs. You can see here many karst springs and disappearing streams. There are about 300 caves and 15 chasms throughout the park. Mostly they are unsecured and difficult to access.
The main starting points for hiking in this area are the cities of Tisovec, Pohronska Polhora and Murań. From the latter you can easily get to the ruins of the castle of the same name. An old cable car runs between Tisovc and Polhora, which used to be used to remove spoil from iron ore mines.
