Košice Castle

Local name: Košický Hrad

The ruins of the Košice castle are not very impressive. Only the remains of the foundations have survived to the present day. They are located on the Zamkowa (Hradowa) hill, 466 meters above sea level. There is a well marked path from the village. There is also a 21-meter high tower right next to it, which offers a beautiful view of Košice and the surrounding area.

The castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century, probably by the Palatine Omoda Aba. Its construction is associated with a dispute over the succession to the Hungarian throne after the death of the last king of the Arpad dynasty - Andrzej III. On the opposite sides stood the Anjou and Přemyslids, supported by some Hungarian mighty (including the Abów).

Interestingly, no information about this castle can be found in any written sources. The building is therefore quite mysterious, because little can be said about the exact cause of its creation and the role it played in the history of the region. According to archaeologists, it was supposed to be one of the largest in Slovakia, but it was never completed.
