Monument of Milan Rastislav Stefanik
Local name: Socha Milana Rastislava Štefánika
The statue of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik (Socha Milan Rastislav Stefanik) stands on the Danube waterfront, next to the Eurovea shopping center. It depicts Stefanik in the pilot's suit, goggles pushed forward. Behind him is a stone pylon.
Milan Rastislav Stefanik was a politician, engineer and astronomer. Before World War I, he worked at the Mont Blanc Observatory and in South America. During the war he fought in French aviation and acted on the creation of the Slovak state in London, Paris and Washington. He died in 1919 returning to the country from Italy. He was to become the minister of war in the Czechoslovak government.
Stefanik's monument stood on the coast in 2009, during the great reconstruction of this area. A new promenade and extensive recreational spaces were created on the banks of the river. The general in the pilot's suit looks at those passing from the high pedestal.
