City History Museum - Old City Hall
Local name: Múzeum dejín mesta - Stará radnica
The Old Town Hall (Stara Radnica) is one of the oldest monuments in Bratislava. It is located on the Market Square and currently houses the City History Museum. It is a Gothic building with a tower rebuilt in the Baroque style.
The Bratislava Town Hall was not built from the beginning as the seat of the city authorities. It was created in the fifteenth century from the merger of two houses standing on the Market Square, Jakub and Pewer House. They belonged to rich burghers. A facade decorated with stonemason's details has been preserved from this period. In the following centuries, the city council bought two more neighboring houses, Renaissance and Rococo. The town hall was rebuilt many times, which is why today it is a mix of various architectural styles. The tower adjacent to it was originally Gothic, but in the 17th century it was given a baroque character.
Currently, the City Hall building houses the exhibition of the City History Museum. It focuses primarily on the lives of residents against the backdrop of the most important historical events. In addition to traditional exhibits and documents, there are touch screens that make it easier to imagine how the city looked in the past. Visitors can also watch the film "People and the City".
