Chatam Sofer Memorial
Local name: Pamätník Chatam Sofer
The Chatam Sofer Memorial is a remnant of the Old Jewish Cemetery in Bratislava. It is located at the entrance to the tunnel under the Castle Hill. The modern shape of the mausoleum hides the tombstones of Bratislava Jews, saved during World War II, including Rabbi Chatam Sofera. Next to the building there are matzevot made of glass, which are to remind about the cemetery existing here.
The Old Jewish Cemetery in Bratislava was founded in the 17th century. In 1943, the tunnel under the Castle Hill was destroyed. 23 tombstones, mainly belonging to rabbis, were saved. They were hidden under a concrete dome. They remained hidden until 2000.
In the years 2000–2002 a new Mausoleum was built. It is a simple, rectangular structure fitted into the slope of the terrain. Inside, surviving matzevot and fragments smashed while working on the tunnel. There are also Jewish books, small everyday items and utensils used during rites. Outside, in the place where the cemetery was, there are glass images of matzevot.
