Hviezdoslav Square

Local name: Hviezdoslavovo námestie

Hviezdoslavovo namestie is one of the most important squares in Bratislava. It is located between the New Bridge and the National Theater. It is planted with trees and bushes. There are also two fountains and a statue of Paweł Orszagh Hviezdoslav. The square is a place of various cultural and state events.

The square has a very long history. It was marked out in the Middle Ages. Here were the houses of the most important merchant families of Bratislava. In 1848, from the balcony of the Zoldfa Hotel standing here, Lajos Kossuth proclaimed "Rebirth of Hungary". Later, the emperor Franz Josef and Albert Einstein stayed at the hotel.

At the end of the 20th century, the square was thoroughly rebuilt. Today it is a city promenade with trees, benches and a platform intended for performances and speeches. Christmas markets, concerts and city events take place here.
