Museum of Victims of Communism and Resistance
Local name: Muzeul Victimelor Comunismului și al Rezistenței
The memorial site is dedicated to the victims of communism and members of the Resistance Movement. It was founded in 2000 in the building of the former political prison Sighet, built in 1897 by the Austro-Hungarian administration. The exhibitions show the development and fall of the communist totalitarian regime in Romania.
The exhibition space includes over 50 prison rooms. You can see in them both the conditions in which the prisoners were held, as well as a collection of photographs and works of art. Among them are two large sculptures by Camilian Demetrescu entitled "Homage to a political prisoner" and the triptych "Requiem" by Victor Cupșa, dedicated to the victims of communism in all countries.
The memorial site also includes the Cemetery of the Poor, located about 2.5 km outside the city. In the 20th century it served as a burial place for the homeless and the poor. In the years 1950-1954 political prisoners from the Sighet prison were buried there. Most often in secret and in mass graves.
