Bârsana Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Bârsana

The history of the monastery dates back to the end of the 14th century. Currently, the complex consists of: a church, a chapel, monks' cells, a bell tower and two workshops. A museum has also been in operation since 2005, which has collected a collection of valuable icons and volumes. The complex has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The interior of the church was repainted in 1806 in a mixture of Rococo and Baroque styles. The walls of the temple are decorated with paintings made directly on wood. They mainly depict scenes from the Old Testament and the Last Judgment. An interesting fact is peacocks raised in the monastery. They are usually kept in closed cages, but they can be seen during sightseeing.

The monastery church was built in 1711 on Mount Jbar as a form of thanks to God for overcoming the plague epidemic. There was also a cemetery for her victims. The temple was moved to the valley at the end of the 18th century. According to local legend, the dead moved at that time to be able to rest in the monastery land.
