St. Michael's Church
Local name: Biserica Sfântul Mihail
St. Michael in Cisnadioara stands on the top of a rocky hill. You can get to it by walking along the path that leads through the forest and then climbing the cobblestone steps. The historic complex includes a temple from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, a fence wall and a fragment of the outer tower added in the 13th century.
The church was built in the Romanesque style and its appearance was inspired by the Rhenish basilicas in the Sibiu region. It is considered one of the oldest and most representative examples of Romanesque architecture in Transylvania. As one of the few medieval churches, it has not been modified over the centuries and has retained its original appearance and character.
The wall surrounding the temple was built in the second half of the 13th century. It was 4-6 m high from the outside and 2-3 m high from the inside.
