Saint Michael's Cathedral

Local name: Catedrala Romano-Catolică Sfântul Mihail

The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael is located inside the medieval fortress of Alba Iulia. It is the longest cathedral in Romania - it is 83 meters long, 38 meters wide and 19 meters high. It is also the oldest cathedral in the country, its history dates back to the beginning of the 10th century.

The temple was built in the Gothic style, but the present appearance, which also shows the Gothic elements, owes a thorough reconstruction carried out in the years 1246-1291. It was necessary because the cathedral was destroyed during the great Tatar invasion in 1242. In the following centuries, the church was also enriched with Renaissance frescoes, which you can see, among others. in the Lazo chapel, located in the apse of the northern aisle.

In the aisles there are sarcophagi of prominent figures, including the sarcophagus of the governor of Hungary Iancu de Hunedoara, his son Władysław of Hunedoara, Queen Isabella and John II Sigismund Zápolya, the first prince of Transylvania.
