Third Gate of the Fortress
Local name: Poarta a III-a a Cetății
The Third Fortress Gate is the main entrance to the Alba Carolina Fortress. It is located on the eastern side of the fortifications, in the middle of the wall connecting two bastions: the Bastion of St. Eugeniusz and the Bastion of St. Capistrano.
The gate is 20 meters wide and is topped with a horse statue of Emperor Charles VI, during whose reign the fortress was built. In the middle of the elevation, you can also see a double-headed eagle, the coat of arms of Austria, with the coat of arms of Transylvania on its chest.
The gate has the shape of a triumphal arch with three semicircular entrances - the central one served as the main entrance, especially for horse crossings, and the two smaller ones on the sides were intended for pedestrians. Above the side entrances there are panels depicting Prince Eugene of Savoy, an outstanding commander of the Imperial Austrian troops.
