Sagres is a small town on the Algarve Coast located adjacent to the southernmost point of Portugal, Cape St. Vincent. The place is known for the amazing cliffs behind which it was believed in the past was the end of the world.
The town has retained its peaceful character to this day. There are no crowds of tourists or big hotels here. There are, however, family, intimate guesthouses, small, traditional restaurants and wild beaches located at the foot of the cliffs. So Sagres is a great place for people who are looking to escape the crowds.
The most important attraction of Sagres is the Cape of St. Wincentego, to which there are walking routes. At its end, on the site of a former monastery, there is the Cabo de Sao Vicente Lighthouse. Closer to the city, you can see the former Sagres fortress, which was of strategic importance in the era of great geographical discoveries. According to the sources, it was here that King Henryk Żeglarz founded a school of navigation and cartography considered to be the first maritime school in the world.
