According to tradition, it was here, at Casa do Infante, that in 1394 Henry the Sailor was born, the prince who was the creator of the Portuguese colonial empire. In 1924, the building was classified as a Portuguese national heritage. It is currently open to visitors and is one of the sections of the City Museum. There you can see dioramas showing the former customs house from the fourteenth century and the entire medieval Porto. In addition, the remains of old goods, coins, ceramics, and even seventeenth-century pipes.
Until the 19th century, the Casa do Infante building housed the headquarters of the customs office and the residences of senior officials of the King of Portugal. For some time the royal mint was also located here. Over the centuries, the building has undergone many changes, but is still one of the oldest in the city. Its current appearance is mainly the result of a seventeenth-century reconstruction.
