Liberty Square

Local name: Praça da Liberdade

Praça da Liberdade, or Freedom Square in Porto, is located on one of the city's main streets - Avenida dos Aliados. The most characteristic element of this place is the equestrian statue of King Peter IV. The monument was inaugurated in 1866, its author is the French sculptor Anatol Calmels. Around the square there are buildings of banks, restaurants, hotels and department stores, as well as the beautiful monastery Palácio das Cardosas.

The design of Plac Wolności was created in the 18th century, together with land development plans and creation of new streets. It was situated between the palaces of richer inhabitants of Porto and the medieval city walls, which unfortunately did not survive to our times. The appearance of the square changed significantly after 1916, when the modern Avenida dos Aliados Boulevard was built north of it. The D. Luis I Bridge and Sao Bento Railway Station are nearby.
