The Martires Parish

Local name: Paroquia Dos Martires

The Basilica of the Virgin Mary of the Martyrs is located in the Chiado district. It is a small, baroque church with a beautifully decorated interior. The temple has a simple multi-story facade with pilasters and three entrance portals. The interior is decorated with stucco and painting decorations and classicist stained glass windows.

The first church in this place stood immediately after the rebound of Lisbon from the Moors in 1171. He was dedicated to the martyrs who gave their lives in the fight against Islamists in Portugal. The temple survived after rebuilding to the great earthquake in 1755. Less than a decade later, the current church was built.

It is a baroque, single-nave building, covered with a barrel vault with lunettes. The entire vault is covered with rich stucco decorations and representations of the Virgin Mary in the sky and the martyrs surrounding her. Three classicist altars with Marian scenes have also survived.
