Monument dedicated to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis de Pombal, who served as Prime Minister of Portugal in 1750-1777. His work was the reconstruction of Lisbon, especially the Baixa district after the catastrophic earthquake of 1755. The bronze statue of the marquis stands on a high pedestal decorated with sculptures of workers working on the reconstruction. It is facing the district he created.
