Homeland Martyrs' Field is commonly known as Campo de Santa. Due to the fact that in 1817, 11 companions of Gomes Freire were hanged here, the area of the former slaughterhouse, bullfighting area and flea market (Freira da Ladra) received a new name commemorating those who gave their lives for their homeland. The Minister of Culture recognized the Field of Martyrs of the Fatherland as a public good by issuing an appropriate decree.
Currently, it is a large garden with an area of nearly 2.6 ha. Garden Braamcamp Freire occupies its southern part. There is a children's playground, a sports field, a statue of dr. Sousa Martins and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
