The Torel Garden probably owes its name to a family of Dutch origin who once lived in this place. The garden was founded on the top of the Santana hill from where there is an amazing view of the old part of Lisbon.
There are several small lakes in the garden, as well as the statue of the composer, conductor and pianist in one person José Vianna da Motta. Nearby is the Field of Martyrdom of the Fatherland, important for the Portuguese.
The garden is surrounded by numerous villas from the 18th and 19th centuries. In 2000, it underwent a kind of revitalization, the purpose of which was, inter alia, to install new lighting. From August 2014, the garden plays the role of a city beach. There is a children's playground in the garden.
