An elevator connecting the area around Rossio Square with Carmo Square by the ruins of the Carmelite monastery. It is the only vertical city elevator in Lisbon. It was built in 1900-1902, and its designer was Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, a student of Gustave Eiffel. It is a steel structure 45 m high, with neo-Gothic decorations. The lift is operated by two original cabins from the beginning of the 20th century, each of which can accommodate 24 people.
