Resistance and Freedom Museum of Aljube

Local name: Museu do Aljube Resistência e Liberdade

The Aljube Prison Museum - Freedom and Resistance is a modern, interactive museum dedicated to the resistance movement against the Portuguese dictatorship in the years 1928–1976. There are exhibitions showing the most important opposition leaders, methods of fighting the political police with the resistance movement, and an exhibition about the fight for freedom of the Portuguese colonies.

The Aljube prison was built in the Middle Ages. Initially, it was a church prison, which in time was converted into the seat of the bishop. From the 18th century, women convicted of common crimes were detained here. The prison gained the worst fame during the Portuguese dictatorship, when it served as a political prison. Political police conducted brutal interrogations here. Death sentences were also carried out.

Currently, the Museum of Freedom and Resistance is located in the restored cells and prison rooms. It shows the fight against dictatorship, primarily through the prism of the most important prisoners. Among others, the later prime minister and president of Portugal Martin Santos was detained in Aljube. The top floor of the building is occupied by the exhibition dedicated to the processes of emancipation of Portuguese colonies in Asia, Africa and South America.
