Church of St. Anthony

Local name: Igreja de Santo António

The church of Saint Anthony is located in the Alfama district. It is dedicated to Saint Antoni Padewski, born in Lisbon. In the crypt under the church the place of his birth was marked. The church was built in the Baroque style. It is a three-nave temple with a multi-story facade topped with a carved gable.

The church was built in the Middle Ages, but gained its current appearance during reconstruction in the 18th century. It presents the style of late Baroque with decorative rococo elements. The interior is decorated with azulejos tiles. They created the life story of Saint Antoni.

In 1982, John Paul II visited the church of Saint Anthony. He dedicated the figure of the saint standing in front of the entrance. A commemorative plate was embedded in memory of this visit to the crypt.
