The baroque church das Merces is located in the Old Town of Lisbon. It is a towerless building with a facade with arcades and baroque decorations. The interior is covered with a vault with rich stucco decoration. The side altars are made of wood covered with gilding and carved in intricate plant patterns.
The church was built in 1717. Significantly suffered during the great earthquake in 1755. Only one of the vestibules has survived, the vault is entirely tiled with azulejos. It presented further calls from the Litany to the Mother of God.
The main nave and presbytery of the church received their current appearance during the reconstruction after the earthquake. Mannerist and baroque elements mix here. In addition to stucco decorations, vaulted ceilings with Baroque paintings are also valuable.
