His seat is the former monastery of Jesus, where the patron of the city of Aveiro - Princess Joan of Portugal spent the last days. The aristocrat was the museum's main donor. His rich collection includes unique works of sacred art from the 10th to the 15th century. The pearl of the collection is the 17th century mosaic masterpiece - the tomb of St. Joanna.
The monastery of Jesus belonged to the female Dominican Order, and its history dates back to the second half. 15th century. The current baroque appearance is the result of the building renovation in the 17th century. In 1910 the monastery was closed.
The congregation became famous around the world for religious worship. Joanna. The daughter of King Alfonso V of Portugal spent the last 20 years of her life in the monastery. She was never honored to receive full religious vows, but her life attitude contributed to her beatification in 1693.
