Jaszczurówka Chapel

Local name: Kaplica w Jaszczurówce

Designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jaszczurówka represents the Zakopane style. One-nave wooden church covered with shingle, built without the use of nails, is part of the Małopolska Wooden Architecture Route.

Inside, visitors can see a main altar resembling a Goral's (highlander's) hut, and stained-glass windows depicting the Our Lady of Częstochowa and Gate of Dawn made according to Stanisław Witkiewicz's design, as well as coats of arms of Poland and Lithuania. A statue of the Pensive Christ above the entrance and two altars is the work of Józef Janos from Dębno, and Józef Jan Jachymiak made the glass-painted Stations of the Cross. In the basement, an exhibition of religious folk art has been arranged.

The chapel had been established in the years 1905-1907 from the foundation of Uznańscy, who have been property owners in Szaflary. It was built on the area belonging to the Tatra National Park. The temple is a branch of the parish in Toporowa Cyrhla and since 1983 it has been taken care of by the local priests of the Marian Fathers.

At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, the chapel has underwent extensive renovation work.
